Austin's Biography Austin started cleaning windows in
1979 at nine year old. The idea of starting his own business
came about when he was sitting in his Parent’s Print
Shop one summer morning about 6:30 am. A window cleaner
stopped by and asked his folks if he could clean their
store front. His dad talked to him and the man washed the
windows. Austin watched his every move and was amazed how
fast he was. So Austin asked his Dad how much he was paying the man. His Dad told him $20. Austin mentioned that the
Window Cleaner was only there a 1/2 hour. His Dad replied,
yes, but we cannot do it in that amount of time without
making streaks, he is well worth the dollars because he
makes our business look clean. So Austin asked his dad
if he could borrow some money for a squeegee, bucket, pole,
and scrubber. Then borrowed a towel from his Mom. He went to the hardware store and got the items then caught up
to the Window Cleaner at another business and asked all
kinds of questions and watched him work for hours. Austin
came back to his dad’s print business and asked if
he could clean the windows on the side where the customers
didn’t see much. After his Dad’s approval,
Austin practiced until he didn’t streak. Then he
got the bright idea of asking his Dad if he could wash
his windows the following week for $15.00. His dad said
how about $10 if there are no streaks. Austin accepted
the challenge. Soon he was washing almost all the store
fronts in the downtown area until he ran into the Window
Cleaner when competing for a job. The man took Austin aside
and told him he did not have to sell himself short he could
charge the same price as he did and still get the job.
The Window Cleaner, an elderly man, did not mind Austin
growing his business, as he was going to retire
the following year. To this day Austin has never forgotten
Jerry the Window Cleaner in Red Bluff and considers him
a great mentor. He watched him the following year and the
relationship grew while he learned more about the business.
The man, Jerry of Jerry’s Window Cleaning now has
passed on. This was Austin’s start and he is still
here today Cleaning windows, meeting new people, and making
lots of friends.
